These costs were all required to come from Uplook's general funds.

Those taking responsibility for C3 feel we should launch out again in 2009. However certain changes will be made to "cut our coat according to our cloth".

*Rather than having the team traverse the country (it cost $5000 just to get the vehicles in position on the two coasts) we are considering the teams working smaller circuits, cutting travel costs. Some of the responsible brothers are also considering trailering the cars, limiting wear on the cars and diminishing fuel costs.

*We are intending to shorten the training period at both ends. This will help those attending college or university. Therefore we hope the teams will begin orientation some time in May and conclude by mid-September, Lord willing.

...any elders with a young man in their assembly whom they believe would benefit from traveling with Team C3, or a serious young man seeking more information about the opportunity, please contact Grant Canfield: gandscanfield@pei.sympatico.ca

GNOM 4 - Outreach in Kentucky

From Uplook website. Jabe Nicholson & GNOM team planning outreach in Kentucky:

http://www.uplook.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=823&Itemid=104
Good News on the Move makes its way toward the northwest U.S., it will not be long, Lord willing, until the team reaches Richmond, KY, for its final gospel surge, toward the end of May. It's rapid growth is due to it's proximity to the Greater Toronto area. It is a community of over sixty-five cultures and languages and is the most diverse in Canada, with 65.4% of its population part of visible minority groups. Markham has a large concentration of over 900 high tech companies located here.

Mount Albert, located one half hour north of Markham, was originally settled as a farming community and then developed into a commercial centre. It is surrounded by a diverse rural district that includes farms, regional forests and conservation areas. It now has a population of about 3,500.

The Work:
There is a new work commencing in Mount Albert, ON as an outgrowth of Markham Bible Chapel. Most of the outreach effort during the week will be focused in the Mount Albert community of 2,186 residences. The team will be based in Markham and following the morning classes at Markham Bible Chapel and lunch will travel to Mount Albert for the day. Saturday will be spent in Markham assisting in a local outreach effort to make contacts primarily for the upcoming 10 week Christianity Explored evangelistic course beginning September 22. A car show and garage sale is planned to attract visitors to the chapel parking lot.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Team East Update
News from Ajax, ON
Dear fellow brothers and sisters in the Lord,
This past week was quite eventful for our team as each of our cars had various problems that required attention. Before heading to Ajax from Kanata, we attempted to do some troubleshooting with both the Oldsmobile and the Pontiac. We discovered that the Pontiac had problems with a rear brake drum that required it to be hauled on the trailer. We managed to get the Oldsmobile running again, however, it gave us problems the whole way to Ajax. A drive that should of took 5 hours, instead took 8 hours. When we drove on the 401 the lug nuts of the front driver-side wheel kept coming loose and the car started "coughing" when it got above 100km/h. This forced us to pull over often to tighten the wheel and this became more dangerous the closer we got to Toronto. We decided to take Hwy 2 instead of the 401 so we could pull over on the side of the road more safely. At around 9:30 pm, we decided to park the Oldsmobile in the town of Brighton, and pick it up the next day with the trailer.
We know that God has purpose in everything, and there's no exception here. Despite taking twice as long to get to Ajax, we had several opportunities to hand out literature and have conversations. While on the side of the road, a couple from Venezuela, now living in Toronto, pulled over in their minivan, asking if they could take photos of our cars. We were able to have a conversation with them and provide literature and CDs. When we stopped for dinner, there were two older men by the names of Nelson and Doug who were quite interested in the cars. Here again we were able to hand out literature and share the Gospel with these men. On top of this, we handed out another dozen CDs and paintings to various people we met along our travels. Despite taking double the time to get to Ajax, we realize there was a reason for
this.
For our week in Ajax, Ontario we worked with the believers at Rossland Ridge Bible Chapel. Our week comprised of attending several car shows and doing door-to-door work to invite the community to a BBQ outreach on Friday night. For our teaching this week, our brother Bill Yuille from Markham Bible Chapel joined us and we studied the Person and work of the Holy Spirit. This study was quite helpful and we thank Bill for his time this past week.
In Durham Region (where Ajax is located), there was a car show nearly every night. We ended up attending 3 different car shows in Port Perry, downtown Oshawa, and right in Ajax. We encountered a lot the same people at the different shows and were able to have conversations with some of them. On Wednesday night in Ajax, we were given a few minutes to explain our trip,
and we took the opportunity to share the gospel. The biggest show of the week was in Ajax with nearly 350 cars. All of us had some conversations and were able to hand out hundreds of CDs and paintings. Unfortunately, we were only able to bring one car to the shows this week, as both other cars needed various replacement parts.
At the car show on Wednesday night, we met a man named Rolly who helped us with our car problems. He helped us with the front wheel of the Oldsmobile and was able to diagnose the clutch problems we have had with the Chevy. In 4 hours on Thursday night we were able to help this man install a new clutch in the Chevy. It is interesting to note that we were able to find a new clutch assembly within 20 minutes of Ajax. Apparently this clutch assembly had been returned years earlier to this auto parts store and has been sitting on the shelf, just waiting for us to ask for it. It's really encouraging to know that although we may not know where a certain car part is located, God definitely does. Praying for car parts may seem trivial, however, through this trip we have seen time and time again that He truly does provide!  You can also pray for this man Rolly who is divorced and quite lonely. His life is cars, and he fills the void in his life with them. The guys were able to be a positive testimony to him and he did take literature and a CD.
Our week wrapped up with a community BBQ on Friday evening, where we able to put all 3 cars on display. There were nearly 200 people at the event and we had a chance to do several paint boards and rope tricks for the children. Although most of the people were from the assembly, several families from the neighbourhood showed up. On Saturday afternoon, we also had the
opportunity to go the Pickering Market, where we handed out quite a few CDs and had several good conversations. Finally, on Sunday, we broke bread with the believers at Rossland Ridge Bible Chapel in the morning, and provided a trip update at the evening meeting. Both a testimony and message were shared, encouraging the saints here in Ajax. Although it was a frustrating week with all the car problems, we saw first-hand that God continues to use these cars, even when they are broken down. Praise the Lord for His faithfulness and continued provision on this journey!
You can also pray for many of the conversations we had with people in the neighbourhoods around Rossland Ridge Bible Chapel. We distributed door-to-door packages that included a Bible text, CD and "God's Answers to Man's Questions" booklet.
The Cross Canada Cruisers East Team
The Plymouth Brethren Wiki updated - Brethrenpedia new features!!
There are a few new features on BrethrenPedia.com I wanted to highlight:
* First, there is a new Bible search feature which links any quotes scripture references to BibleGateway.com
* Second, we are compiling as many weekly assembly sermons into one "Assembly podcast":
http://brethrenpedia.com/BrethrenPedia:Assembly_Podcasts
* Finally we have added a feature that will assist in getting started entering your assembly info! Our days have been spent sitting under the teaching and encouragement of God’s word. Never have I had such an exhausting week of learning!  The training began with the message of “The Great Commission” and “God’s part/ our part in the gospel” by Jabe Nicholson. Throughout the week, faithful brothers like Arnet McIntee and Eric Smith (from Good News On the Move) have encouraged and taught us in our witness for Christ and the basics of “The Paint Board”. We’ve been appreciating the reality of our salvation and the faithfulness of God in loving us in our sin. We have the message of salvation! How can we not share the greatest news in the world; that peoples souls can be saved! 2 Kings 7:9 - “They said one to another, we do not well: this is a day of good tidings, and we hold our peace...” Christ was “made sin to be sin for us...that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.”2 Cor. 5:21. People’s souls are in our hands. Do we care?
Since our arrival, Darren Yanisiew, Stephen Dick, and Stan Wells have caught up with the team. Darren is from Guelph and resides in a wheelchair due to Muscular Dystrophy, but has not let his condition affect his desire to serve the Lord. Stephen Dick is from Victoria, BC and is keen on serving the Lord in this ministry. As of today, May 10, we have twelve team members: Joel, Mitch, Stan, Elijah, Josh, Jay, Dale, Stephen Owens, Stephen Dick, Dan, Darren, and me.
Thursday night we handed out William MacDonald’s c.d., “The World Biggest Secret” around the city of Guelph. A few people to remember in prayer in regards to that outreach: Gerry – an older, ex-Catholic man confused in his perception of Christ, two men who accepted the c.d.’s based on the idea of sacrifice in the gospel, and Brandon – a pot smoking teenager that accepted the c.d. and showed interest.
Thanks to each one of you who have upheld every one of us before the Lord in prayer! The Lord is going to do a great work and your prayer and support strengthens us. Carlson described the Communion experience as "tearing up bread and passing around cups of grape juice after men in the assembly spontaneously stood and repeated the words that they felt prompted by the Holy Spirit to say," and she felt that was no longer enough. As Campbell reports, " 'I want to be more connected to history, the history of the Christian church,' said Carlson, who relishes the knowledge that she is worshiping the way Christians have for centuries. 'There have been generations of people before me saying the same prayers.' Seems quite educated:
So on May 10, I heard John Stackhouse speak. He is a Canadian former Plymouth Brethren, close to my age, who has taught in a secular university and is now at a Regent College. Since coming to Regent and being in contact with the wider North American Christian community he has become increasingly aware of how other Christians are talking about women.
In his talk he said that he was taken aback by the language that he heard being used about women, especially the terms 'receivers and responders'.
"What is that about?" he said, "using the language of the sex act to talk about women in church. Are nursing mothers receivers anyway? This is ridiculous." Yes, it will inconvenience you, and cost you, and stretch you, but many of those who made the sacrifice to be at Little Rock spoke of it as a high water mark in their spiritual life. How the Lord has protected, encouraged, provided and blessed!
There are just a few weeks left before the team heads for the grand finale in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The dates for that event are Saturday afternoon, June 3 through Saturday morning, June 9.
We want to make an urgent appeal to you.
Of course we long for your concerted prayers and thank you in advance. But we also want to ask: Are you able and willing to join the team for "Good News, Sioux Falls!"? If you have a love for souls, a desire to see advancement of the cause of Christ, and a willingness to work with other like-minded believers, you are heartily invited.
Some will come to pray as they help prepare meals. Some will be involved with Kid's Clubs in the park, some in open air preaching. Some will serve as door hangers (simply leaving a pack of literature on the door handles), others as door knockers (seeking to engage people in spiritual conversation). There is a place for every evangelistically-minded person. The Lord will direct you as to what you can do for Him.
We have reserved rooms in the Best Western Ramkota Hotel, a moderately priced hotel (check it out at siouxfalls.ramkota.com). You may book rooms by calling their direct phone line at 605-336-0650. By mentioning the "Good News, Sioux Falls!" group, you will get our special discounted rate. The hotel provides free parking, free shuttle service to and from the airport, and has many amenities including indoor pool, exercise room, and wireless internet.
The day as a group will begin with a hot buffet breakfast (included in the price), followed by a time of prayer, strategy, and stories of God's dealings the day before. We will then proceed to the activities mentioned above. We hope to have a noon gathering for singing, testimonies, and lunch, then back into afternoon outreach.
In the evenings we will participate in whole-team activities. We are renting the historic courthouse in the center of town for three nights (Monday-Wednesday) for a series entitled "Christianity on Trial at the Old Court House." We have already sent in the graphics for a strategic billboard to announce the event. We will also have Bible talks at our hotel on Thursday and Friday evenings.
There is much more information in the April Uplook magazine. It may be seen on Uplook's website at www.uplook.org
If you are prayerfully considering coming, or have questions, you may contact brother Larry Sax at:
home: 605-582-8299
cell: 605-759-5781
larssax@alliancecom.net
Also check out their website at: siouxfallsbible.com
On behalf of the Good News on the Move team,
Jabe Nicholson
"But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises (excellencies) of Him who hath called you out of darkness into His marvellous light" (1 Peter 2:9).
New brethren blogger on the block!
I was very excited to find the "Slidell Louisiana Brethren News" blog - here!!! The believers in Slidell were hit hard by Hurrican Katrina and still need our prayers. Scott Leach is a member of the discussion forum and has done a great job keeping us all posted on how the believers are coping. If we are the problem we cannot be the solution.
-We should be people of praise. If you are praising constantly then it will be easy to praise instantly....
Response to women in brethren churches
Suzanne has been posting alot of good material on head-coverings, and women's roles - here
In response to this post Suzanne states:
Now read this paragraph and note (3).
16. It is not intended to replace the regular reports from the team members. But I wanted to draw a few things to your attention.
First, I wanted you to know that your prayers regarding bus safety and health are appreciated and being answered. Little Hope Stevenson continues to be well at last report and the bus has run well since you specifically prayed. Although we are taking it in for some needed repairs this week.
You might remember Karen Denny, wife of brother Jerry, a valued and hard-working couple with the Good News team. She has a chronic problem with her neck and after a vigorous week in Wisconsin, has had serious discomfort with it. I know the Dennys would appreciate your united prayers.
A number of opportunities have been opened to us here in the Fox Valley (Appleton area). The Lord has been working.
We had an opportunity at a local college. It was called "Stump the Preacher," at which about 50 people showed, including 2 vocal and articulate atheists. Until an American Indian woman spoke up from the back row.
She told of sexual abuse by her grandfather, alcohol and drug abuse; time in jail. She said to the atheists: "Your message wouldn't have helped me there. Only Jesus could help me. And He's turned my hell into heaven." The atheists were silenced and soon after beat a hasty retreat. Nothing like a transformed life presented as convincing apologetic.
The team has been visiting door-to-door, went to the mall, did some street preaching downtown, witnessed at a private college, and handed out gospel materials at the local Wal-Mart. I'll leave them to give the details.
But I would ask for more prayer regarding the evening gospel outreach at the community center. Several sinners have attended as well as some believers from various local churches. But we would love to see more and to see some saved. Tonight I found it difficult to preach. We need to see the Lord bare His arm in salvation.
Please remember us as we make preparations for the big gospel outreach in Sioux Falls. Perhaps you could join the team as well for the week of June 3-9.
Again we thank you for your prayer investment.
Jabe Nicholson
GospelHall.org down??
Seems that something has happened to the GospelHall.org website? Suzanne has a brethren background and in this post she talks about life as a brethren teen:
There were three levels of depravity for Brethren teenagers when it came to getting an education. My friend and I drank the deepest and have been drunk ever since.
First, neither young men nor women were supposed to attend university. It represented the knowledge of the world, secular knowledge, and could only spoil you. It did not matter if it was a denominational college. In many ways that was even worse. Were not the other churches the 'table of demons'? Wouldn't their teaching contaminate you?
Upward Bound 2006 Conference
This year's Upward Bound Conference will be held August 13-25, 2006 at Wilfred Laurier University (Week 1) and Algonquin Park (Week 2).
Upward Bound is a two week retreat into the study of God's Word. The first week we stay at WLU and sit under its teaching. During the second week we travel to the beautiful Algonquin Park to live out the lessons learned.
The focus of Upward Bound is to encourage Christians of every age (but particularly of the College and Career demongraphic) to get excited about studying the Word of God and living a victorious Christian life.
Upward Bound is committed to providing in-depth ministry on fundamental Bible doctrines, as well as seminars on a wide range of practical subjects. There is also a detailed "How to study the Bible" course with a hands-on component.
Wilfred Laurier University (Week 1)
Beyond the daily seminars, there are many other activities to enjoy at Upward Bound. You will have opportunities to learn and fellowship with many new Christian friends from across North America and around the world. You will be able to spend time with the speakers. Friendships are formed that will last a lifetime. In the evening, we have a chapel time with testimonies, quizzes, singing and challenging messages.
At Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario. You will be billeted in a comfortable double room and enjoy renowned home made meals. During free time we use the university facilities for: swimming, basketball, volleyball, tennis, squash, aerobics and weight lifting.
Speakers for Week 1
Dr. David Gooding (Belfast, N. Ireland)
Brian Russell (Eastbourne, UK)
Dennis LeBlanc (Fredericton, NB)
Sandy McEachern (Halifax, NS)
Charlie Tempest (St Catharines, ON)
Algonquin Park (Week 2)
Challenge yourself as we travel to Algonquin Park for a five night stay. The accommodations provide a spectacular view of God's creation.
The week in the park gives a practical component to Upward Bound, as we share burdens and experience the blessings of God together. There is also ample time for personal reflection.
This is a wonderful time for Bible sessions, reflection, testimonies, campfires, canoeing, and cliff jumping.
Upward Bound Application
There is no upper age limit for being a part of Upward Bound but you must be a minimum of 18 years to attend.
To come, please send your name, address (including city and postal code/zip code), phone number and email address, along with a deposit cheque (payable to Upward Bound) in the amount of $25.00 to:
Sandy McEachern
508-1044 Tower Road
Halifax, Nova Scotia
Canada B3H 4R1
If you would like more information please call:
(902) 420-9489 or (902) 830-1305
or email:   sandymceachern@hotmail.com
Discipleship Camp 2006
Are you at least 19 years of age or older?
(Please note: There is NO UPPER AGE LIMIT It raised many good questions in his mind which we all need to ask ourselves, and ask about our assemblies:
Sitting in the rooms at KLBC a number of questions were raised:
1) The importance of good teaching. Y0u can have great "worship" but if you have bad teaching you could be worshipping the wrong God or worshipping somebody you do not know (eg. the samaritan woman)
2) As leaders it is important to set very good examples in all areas of life especially for those you are discipling. Even the basics like bible reading and praying. Some may argue that this could be boasting if they show in public what they do, but its not a matter of showing in public and boasting but allowing those you disciple to see a model of what it should be like. ( If you dont model or model badly you probrably find that those under your leaderhip will probrably be the same) and
3) A question for most church leaders. Were churches made for "churched" people or for those who dont know God and Jesus. If they are made to reach those who are unchurched. How does your church do it? Does it do it well? or is really only attracting the churched?
The hiccup lady
I found this blog entry today:
In the Brethren no woman ever speaks. In the Plymouth Brethren no woman ever gave testimony, or prayed during prayer meeting, opened a hymn, (without any musical instrumetns this can be a crucial role) or even shushed their children audibly. Mothers sometimes carried little bags of candy, no, that was the lady who sat in the row behind us. Oops. Sometimes when we were kneeling in prayer, she would sneak me a candy. My mother never knew that.
However, there was one exception. This was the hiccup lady. She was an elderly single woman. She had a disorder that caused her to hiccup sometimes for 20 minutes without stopping. No one ever shushed her and she was not excommunicated. They knew she could not help it. For some reason God had sent her to show the assembly that woman can never be entirely silent in the church.
Upward Bound Winter Retreat
When: February 24 to 26 (Registration begins Friday @ 8:00 PM Retreat ends Sunday @ approx. 2:30 PM)
Where: Riverview Bible Camp (near Hanover, ON)
Who: If you are 18 years of age or older and would like to enjoy some great Christian fellowship with like-minded individuals, along with some awesome nourishment (both spiritual and physical), come and join us. We were very blessed to labor alongside the believers there in spreading the gospel. We had unique opportunities to share, setting up tables in front of both entrances to Wal-Mart in Mineola. Many good conversations took place there. Lisa, one of the persons we spoke with, was encouraged to see the team and joined us for several of the gospel meetings in Golden.
We were able to spend a good part of Tuesday morning on campus at Taylor Junior College. Many good contacts were made with those who heard the gospel and are in need of the Savior. Joseph R. and Matt S. are two of many that could use our prayers.
More information will be sent along regarding our week in Golden, but as the team has moved on to Tulsa, Oklahoma, we feel a great need for the saints to intercede on our behalf. On Saturday, the team will be engaged in serious spiritual battle as we go out sharing the good news of the Lord Jesus Christ. There is a large Jehovah Witness convention and the team will be going out to distribute literature and engage people in conversations. We desire that intercession be made that God would give us His strength and His wisdom to be able to share with those who are lost. As the team goes out tomorrow, we trust that there are many interceding for us.
We will send out more information on events in Tulsa, and trust to send out also more on the happenings in Golden, Texas.
-- The Good News Team
The gospel site is now live. Floyd Schneider, from Emmaus Bible College, will be with us to provide ministry on our theme: "The Mission of the Church in the Making of Disciples."
Our goal in this annual conference is to provide excellent teaching from God's Word and to apply that teaching with lots of practical ideas for making our local churches healthier and stronger. The four keynote sessions by Floyd, will be complemented by a number of poignant "workshops" on various aspects of church activity.
This conference is not just for elders, but for anyone involved and interested in their local church, which includes both men and women; current as well as future leaders.
I would refer all readers to the Kawartha Lakes Bible College (PETERBOROUGH, ON) website:
http://klbc.ca/calendar.php?&eventID=28
for more information.
Women in brethren churches
Sduplessie, an elder at an assembly in New York, posted this statement on the discussion forum. The elders at his assembly published and distributed this statement to the entire congregation, and while it may be a bit long, it is very well thought out so I thought I'd post some of it here.
The Role of Women in the Ministry & Body Life at Good News Bible Chapel
By the elders of Good News Bible Chapel
June, 2005
"… Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it … Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good … All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines … Everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way."
- I Corinthians 12:27, 7, 11; 14:40 NIV
Introduction:
In our desire to see everyone at Good News - men and women - participating in the ministry opportunities and the general life of the church and using their gifts as the Holy Spirit leads, we affirm the following:1
1. The Bible is the first and last authority in the teaching and the practice of the church. "All Scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work" - 2 Timothy 3:16, 17.
2. Both men and women are created in the image of God and as such both have identical, intrinsic value (ontological equality) in God's sight (Genesis 1:26, 27). We deny that either man or woman is inferior to the other by creation or nature.
3. God has appointed man to be the head (leader / authority) of the woman - "Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God." - I Corinthians 11:3. This "headship" principle is to be understood in terms of a distinction in role and responsibility - as Jesus submitted in obedience to the "headship" of his Father - not in terms of essence, value or quality of gifting (cf. Galatians 3:38, Ephesians 5:21-24).
4. A clear distinction in roles has existed from the beginning, namely, that a man is to be the leader of his wife (Genesis 2:7; 15-23) because of the order of creation ( I Corinthians 11:3; I Timothy 2:13). This distinction of roles was not caused by the Fall. This distinction continues to this day and is expressed in the concept of submission (Ephesians 5:21-33).
5. The Old Testament, as well as the New Testament, manifests the equally high value and dignity which God attached to both men and women (Genesis 1:26-27, 2:18; Galatians 3:28). Both Old and New Testaments also affirm the principle of male headship in the family and in the covenant community of believers (Genesis 2:18; Ephesians 5:21-33; Colossians 3:18-19; 1 Timothy 2:11-15).
6. The Bible teaches the significance of women in the life and ministry of Jesus in that they were friends, supporters and followers (Luke 8:1-3; John 4:1-42; John 20:1-18). It is notable that women were the last at the cross and that the resurrected Lord appeared first to women.
7. The Bible narrative describes the role of women in the ministries of the infant church including but not limited to the multiple women acknowledged by Paul for their ministry and support in the closing chapter of Romans and other letters; the role of Priscilla and her husband Aquila when they explained or expounded “the way” to Apollos (Acts 18:26); the four daughters of Phillip the evangelist who prophesied (Acts 21:9), etc.
8. The Fall introduced distortions into the relationships between men and women (Genesis 3:1-7, 12, 16).
- In the home, our sin nature may cause the husband's loving, humble headship to be replaced by domination or passivity; and the wife's intelligent, willing submission to be replaced by a desire to take-over or servility.
- In the church, sin may incline men toward a love of worldly power or a surrender of spiritual responsibility, and may incline women to resist limitations on their roles or to neglect the use of their gifts in appropriate ministries.
9. Redemption in Christ aims at removing the distortions introduced by the curse. In the family, husbands should forsake harsh or selfish leadership and grow in love and care for their wives; wives should forsake resistance to their husbands' authority and grow in willing, joyful submission to their husbands' leadership (Ephesians 5:21-33; Colossians 3:18-19; Titus 2:3-5;1 Peter 3:1-7).
In the church, redemption in Christ gives men and women an equal share in the blessings of salvation (Galatians 3:28); nevertheless, some governing and teaching roles within the church are restricted to men (1 Timothy 2:11-15).
10. All believers alike are given gifts by the Holy Spirit (I Corinthians 12; I Pt. 4:10,11) to be used to build up each other in the life of the church and the faith. Note I Corinthians 12:7-10 in particular. We deny that some gifts are restricted to women or to men.
11. All believers, women and men alike, are "priests" (I Peter 2:5; Revelation 1:6). The concept of our priesthood means that all believers, equally, have direct access to God through the one mediator Jesus Christ (I Timothy 2:5).
12. The Biblical record and teaching is that men are to be the leaders in the church. This is seen in the example of Jesus' choosing of 12 men as the disciples, and the qualifications for elders and deacons as "husband of" (I Timothy 3:1-13). We deny that this is a cultural accommodation.
13. In both men and women a heartfelt sense of call to ministry should never be used to set aside Biblical criteria for particular ministries (1 Timothy 2:11-15; 3:1-13; Titus 1:5-9). Rather, Biblical teaching should remain the authority for testing our subjective discernment of God's will. For example, if a woman feels a call by God to preach or teach, such a call will always be consistent with the Biblical principles, regardless of her subjective feelings or personal experience.
14. With half the world's population outside the reach of indigenous evangelism; with countless other lost people in those societies that have not heard the gospel; with the stresses and miseries of sickness, malnutrition, homelessness, illiteracy, ignorance, aging, addiction, crime, incarceration, neuroses, and loneliness, no man or woman who feels a passion from God to make His grace known in word and deed need ever live without a fulfilling ministry for the glory of Christ and the good of this fallen world (1 Corinthians 12:7-21).
15.We are convinced that a denial or neglect of these preceding principles will lead to increasingly destructive consequences in our families, our churches, and the culture at large.
16. The four over-riding Biblical principles in this issue, in no particular order, are that of (1) "headship" (I Corinthians 11:3-16), (2) "orderliness in the meetings of the church" (I Corinthians 14:40), (3) the responsibility of men to lead and women to respond to that leadership (Ephesians 5:21-24), and (4) the gifting by the Holy Spirit of all believers alike for mutual building up of the body of Christ (I Timothy 2:11ff).
View the full document -> here <- on the forum
Plymouth Brethren blogs
I was pleasantly surprised today when I searched blogger for "Plymouth Brethren" blogs. Found a few more than I expected - 403 matches!.
BrethrenPedia - the Plymouth Brethren Wiki
Some of you may be familiar with Wikipedia the free, online encyclopedia that anyone can edit. Jamie Martin:
NEW UPLOOK MAGAZINE EDITOR
Written by Jabe Nicholson
It has become a growing concern that the gospel harvest is not being brought in as it should here in North America, and so we are shifting some of our responsibilities to make ourselves more available to help where we can in the harvest fields.
For this reason I have felt it necessary—after 15 years as editor of the magazine—to step back from the overall preparation of Uplook.
Beginning in September, Lord willing, brother James Martin of Sudbury, Ontario, has agreed to take this responsibility. He is an elder in the assembly there, has a growing family, and runs his own business, among other responsibilities. As well, he serves on our Uplook Ministries board. I ask you to pray for him and his family, especially in the transition months.
Brother Jamie is no stranger to the magazine. On several occasions he has been a guest editor, preparing complete magazines for my final glance. He is a good student of the Word, a lucid writer, and a better manager than I. We look forward, with the Lord’s help, to a better magazine and an enlarged readership.
I will not be leaving the magazine entirely. I hope to contribute most months with a last page article, perhaps some encouraging reports, and also introduce some North American pioneers to you.
I want to utilize my time in preparing some new gospel tools, encouraging pioneer work, training young evangelists, and anything else the Lord shows me in order to be a help in advancing the gospel cause in North America. We will try to keep you informed as these develop.
Thank you for your prayer support in these challenging days as we “occupy” until He comes.
Jabe Nicholson is "On the move"
I'm excited about a new initiative by Jabe Nicholson called "Good news on the move". The article is from 1985, but was just recently published online. Seems he has a high view of the assemblies and fundamentalists.
Here is the article
PLOWBOY: You do have a very strict religious background, don't you?
KEILLOR I grew up in the Plymouth Brethren Church. The Brethren were a tiny minority for whom life was strictly an upstream paddle. A great many things that the people of other creeds got to do were forbidden to us. I've felt that restriction as far back as I can remember. Still, being part of a minority—of whatever sort—is not the worst thing that can happen to somebody.
PLOWBOY: What are your feelings about the Brethren now?
KEILLOR I still believe what I was brought up to believe. I don't go to a Brethren assembly anymore, but I think that's more my fault than theirs. I doubt I'll ever go back, but you never know. People make some unusual turns in their forties, and so could I.
I'm certainly very uncomfortable with churches that I consider a great deal more liberal than the one I was brought up in. I have a very hard time sitting still when a preacher's talking about the value of being a good listener or something like that. When I hear that sort of sermon, I really feel like I ought to get up and walk out.
PLOWBOY: So you feel religion should be rigorous and significant?
KEILLOR Religion is rigorous and significant. Whether a lot of people see it that way or not, it just is. That's not to excuse at all the cruelties that have been done in the name of rigor and doctrinal purity. If those people had really been rigorous themselves, they wouldn't have been intolerant.
Too many people have misconceptions about fundamentalists. Most people think of fundamentalists as very narrow-minded, unhappy, sexually frustrated, embittered people who are intolerant of anything and everything that's different . . . and are hypocrites, to boot. That's a novelist's point of view, though. It's not based on the kind of church I grew up in.
PLOWBOY: You certainly portray fundamentalists—and, indeed, everybody—sympathetically in your "Prairie Home Companion" monologues.
You know you're Plymouth Brethren when....
Rey from NY posted this on his blog. It's a short quiz called "You know you're Plymouth Brethren when"
http://www.biblearchive.com/mambo4_5/content/view/412/58/
Brethren Bustin' Chops     PDF      Print      E-mail
Written by Rey on Friday, 10 June 2005
Well some folk have taken to playing this game online…basically poking fun at ourselves by coming up with a list about our own denominations. So here goes my list. You know you’re a Plymouth Brethren when:
10: Darby is quietly known as the 13th Apostle.
9: You purchase “stylish” head coverings for your wife…either black or white.
8. You know that the Little Flock hymnbook is for the Lord’s Supper.
7. When you deny being a denomination but resort to quotation marks or “so-called” to describe your denomination
6. You refer to any Christian you don’t know by first name as “brother” or “sister”
5. You spend a full hour in a home Bible study poring over Scripture and doing math over detailed charts of things that haven’t happened yet but we know exactly how they’ll pan out.
4. You have a subscription to either Uplook, Precious Seed or Counsel.
3. Several courts have been created with numerous matches going on at the same time.
Each team had to fork over $60 for registration, which entitles the players for prizes.
